A year ago I accepted an invitation
to participate in the sponsorship of an
artificial reef, coordinated by the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo. This old
ship has now become part of the artificial reef program of Broward
County, Florida.
As a marine wildlife artist and a marine biologist, I am keenly aware of the
need for habitat protection and enhancement on the coastal sea floor.
Many factors, including pollution, have endangered all forms of sea life.
People are becoming more aware and are more concerned with what
happens to out marine environment, through a variety of educational
programs. By sinking such ships and other structures along the coasts of
the United States, suitable habitats are positioned appropriately, providing
instant shelter for a multitude of marine species. In this way the sunken
structure becomes an artificial reef which lasts for centuries.
I take great pleasure in presenting this reef, to the marine community of
Florida, as a token of thanks for their support of me and my artwork over
the years. The ship now lies in 130 feet of water and is accessible to
divers and anglers. I will be diving regularly on the wreck to monitor the
recruitment of fish.
To commemorate this event,
I have created a work of art that depicts a
scene of a thriving marine community congregated around my artificial reef located at...
